Fun fact: 51% of Torontonians are foreign born.
What is the best and most enjoyable way to experience this multiculturalism? Street food, of course! Imagine being able to eat crispy rolled pork belly from a Brazilian steakhouse, bao sandwiches from an Asian fusion street food truck with New Orleans beignets for dessert. That’s what the Street Eats Market offers. An international food tasting experience all in one open air market populated by food trucks.
So, what food trucks do they have?
The food trucks available rotate and grow all the time. These mobile restaurants include 6 Spice Rack, Beignet Shoppe, Born2Eat, Busters Sea Cove, Cheesecake in the 6ix, El Bosco, Food from East, Giro D’Italia Ristorante, Golden Grill, Gourmet Hotdog, Meltwich, The Arepa Republic, The Smoke Stop, and Touro Steakhouse. A second permanent location is opening in Scarborough which will only increase the variety.
What types of food can you get there?
The food is not just delicious and international. It is also innovative. Do you want a jerk chicken mac and cheese sandwich? They can do that. Do you want kimchi fries? They can also do that. The only downside is you’ll be desperate to go back after just one trip.
It is also home to some of the best comfort food festivals in the city such as The Mac and Cheese Festival, The Ramen Festival and Fried Chicken Festival. The existing trucks take this opportunity to put their own spin on the food item that the festival is about. That means creative takes on mac and cheese from Latin food trucks or Korean fried chicken.
The best part? You can still taste one of the most important Canadian street food staples: poutine.
Come and taste what is at the heart of the city: multicultural street food. As it is outdoors, the days and hours are seasonal so make sure to plan ahead. Bon Appetit, travelers!
