Tell us a bit about yourself!

Hello, I'm Nicolas, and I'm passionate about guiding tourists through the vibrant and culturally rich city of Bari. Born in 1993, I've had a lifelong love affair with the English language and a deep fascination for cross-cultural interactions.

My journey into the world of languages and intercultural mediation led me to the University of Bari. Along the way, I earned various certificates to further hone my language and mediation skills, always with an eye on fostering meaningful connections between people from different backgrounds.

One of the most transformative experiences in my journey was a cultural exchange program in the heart of London. For nearly a year, I immersed myself in the bustling streets and diverse communities of this global metropolis, fine-tuning my English skills and gaining invaluable insights into intercultural dynamics. It was a life-changing chapter that left an indelible mark on my understanding of language and culture.

How long have you been living in your city and what do you love about it?

I've had the incredible privilege of calling Bari my home for 28 years, and it's where I was born and raised. This city has been an integral part of my life, shaping my experiences and passions in countless ways.

What I love most about Bari is its ability to continually surprise and inspire me. Despite spending nearly three decades here, I still find joy in discovering new, unseen corners that hold secrets waiting to be uncovered. Bari has a way of revealing its charms slowly, making it a constant source of exploration and adventure.

One of my favorite activities is gazing at the city's skyline and spotting the distant top of the cathedral bell tower. This iconic structure not only serves as a symbol of Bari but also connects us to our rich history. It's a moment of reflection and connection with the city's roots.

Bari is a city that wears its history proudly, and one of the ways I like to immerse myself in this history is by counting the eight clock towers that grace our skyline. Each tower has its own unique character and story, and keeping track of them is a delightful way to feel connected to the past while living in the present.

Strolling through the city center is another one of my cherished pastimes. The art nouveau-style buildings from the 1800s are like pieces of living history, bearing witness to the city's evolution over the years. Bari's architectural diversity tells a story of its own, and I revel in the opportunity to admire these structures and their intricate details.

But what truly transports me back in time is a journey into the medieval town, where I can relive the lives of the city's early inhabitants. Wandering through the narrow, winding streets, I can almost hear the echoes of centuries gone by and envision the bustling lives of the old citizens.

How has Lokafy changed your perspective on travel and culture?

One of the most profound changes Lokafy has brought into my life is a deep appreciation for the art of cultural exchange. It has shown me that travel is not just about visiting new places but also about immersing oneself in the local culture. Meeting travelers from diverse backgrounds and sharing our cultural insights has broadened my horizons. It has reinforced the idea that travel is a two-way street, a beautiful opportunity for mutual learning.

As a Lokafyer, I've had the privilege of delving into the hidden stories and traditions of Bari. It has made me more attuned to the intricate cultural tapestry of my own city. Every nook and cranny has a story to tell, every street corner has its significance. It has also underscored the notion that culture is not confined to monuments and museums; it's alive in the people who call a place home.

Guiding travelers has allowed me to connect them with locals in Bari. These interactions have shown me the importance of local perspectives in truly understanding a place. It has emphasized that culture is not just about the tangible aspects but also about the people, their stories, and their way of life.

What are some of the tips or advice that you would give to someone who wants to travel like a local?

Traveling like a local offers a unique and authentic perspective on a destination, allowing you to delve deeper into its culture and lifestyle. To make the most of your journey, consider the following tips:

  1. Begin by researching your destination before your trip. Understand the local culture, customs, and traditions. Learn about any upcoming events, festivals, or holidays that might coincide with your visit.
  2. When it comes to accommodations, opt for places that offer a more immersive experience. Boutique hotels, guesthouses, and vacation rentals in residential neighborhoods can provide a taste of local life. Seek out options run by locals or those that offer homestay experiences.
  3. Rather than relying solely on taxis or tour buses, make use of local public transportation. Buses, trams, and subways not only save money but also provide a chance to interact with locals and observe daily life.
  4. Learning a few basic phrases in the local language can go a long way in fostering connections and showing respect. Locals appreciate it when travelers make an effort to communicate in their language. In cases of language barriers, having translation apps or phrasebooks can be handy.
  5. Explore beyond the typical tourist hotspots. Wander through local neighborhoods, markets, parks, and side streets to get a feel for everyday life. Seek out hidden gems that may not be mentioned in guidebooks.
  6. When it comes to dining, choose local restaurants, street food vendors, and markets frequented by residents. Don't hesitate to ask locals for dining recommendations, and be open to trying traditional dishes.

Any final comments for travelers visiting your city?

First and foremost, when you're in Bari, consider immersing yourself in the local traditions. The city has a rich cultural tapestry, and you can truly connect with it by participating in local customs. Whether it's joining a regional festival or savoring authentic Apulian dishes, embracing these traditions is a wonderful way to get a deeper sense of the city's character.

Bari Vecchia, the historic old town, is a place you shouldn't miss. Take your time wandering through its narrow streets and alleys, and visit iconic landmarks like the Basilica of Saint Nicholas. While you're there, don't forget to indulge in freshly baked focaccia and orecchiette from local street vendors.

Given Bari's coastal location along the Adriatic Sea, make sure to spend some quality time by the water. Enjoy leisurely strolls along the waterfront, take in the sea breeze, and relish the delectable seafood dishes at local restaurants.
