There's a moment Dieter Heiser loves to talk about.
He was guiding Christian, a first-time visitor to Cape Town, through the East Side of the city. They walked into Woodhead's Leather, a craftsman's workshop most tourists would never find on their own. Christian spotted a belt he liked. The craftsman got to work, cutting and stitching it to order right there in the shop. While they waited, Dieter and Christian got talking about Cape Town's history, the people who built the city, and what it means to make something with your hands.
When Christian tried on the finished belt, the look on his face said it all.
"It was a win-win," Dieter recalls. "He got a unique souvenir, and we got to support a local gem."
That's Dieter's idea of a perfect tour. And it's the kind of moment he's been creating for nearly a decade. This month, he completed his 100th Lokafy tour in Cape Town.
Meet Dieter
Dieter Heiser is a Lokafyer guide passionate about sharing Cape Town’s hidden gems. He’s lived here all his life, and he’s excited to share his city with visitors.
For Dieter, guiding is not only about showing places on a map. It is about helping people understand the spirit of the city.
Cape Town holds a special place in his heart for many reasons. Ask him what makes the city special and he doesn't reach for the obvious answer. He talks about the way everything layers together, mountain, sea, and city life all in one place, with a rich history running underneath it all.
“I love Cape Town’s stunning natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. The mix of mountain, sea, and urban life makes it special to me.”
What Makes a Tour Truly Special
After guiding 100 tours, Dieter has a clear idea of what makes an experience memorable for visitors. For him, the key is personalization.
“A tour is exceptional when it is personalized, with flexibility to explore off the beaten path spots and genuine interactions with locals.”
That flexibility allows each walk through the city to take on its own personality. Some travelers want history, others want food, art, or neighborhood stories. The best tours adapt to the curiosity of the people exploring the city.
When asked his favorite part of being a Lokafyer, he says, “my favourite part is connecting with travellers and seeing their eyes light up when they discover something new.”
Hidden Gems Dieter Loves to Share
Cape Town has no shortage of famous sights, but Dieter loves introducing visitors to places they might not discover on their own. One of his favorite spots is a hidden waterfall inside Kirstenbosch Gardens. Many visitors walk through the gardens without realizing this quiet corner exists.
Another highlight is watching the sunset from Signal Hill. As the sun drops behind the ocean, the entire city seems to pause for a moment. The view stretches across the Atlantic, the mountains, and the skyline below. These moments help travelers see Cape Town from a different perspective.
A Neighborhood Everyone Should Visit
If there is one place Dieter always recommends, it is the Bo Kaap neighborhood.
Known for its colorful houses and rich cultural heritage, the area offers a unique glimpse into the city’s history and community life. Dieter says “the history, food, and community vibe are unbeatable.”
Walking through the streets, visitors quickly understand why this part of Cape Town leaves such a strong impression.
Advice for Travelers Visiting Cape Town
After spending years guiding people through the city, Dieter has one simple piece of advice for travelers:
“Be open to trying new things and engaging with locals. That is where the real magic happens.”
Some of the best travel memories come from unexpected moments. A conversation with a shop owner, a recommendation from a local, or discovering a place that was never on the original itinerary. That spirit of curiosity is exactly what makes exploring Cape Town so rewarding.
100 Tours and Counting
Reaching 100 tours is a meaningful milestone, but for Dieter it is also a reminder of why he started guiding in the first place. Every tour is a chance to share the places, stories, and local experiences that make Cape Town unforgettable.
And for travelers who want to see the city through the eyes of someone who knows it best, there is no better way to explore than with a local guide.
