About You
Tell us a bit about yourself. What inspired you to become a Lokafyer?
I am a Freelance Local Guide and Hospitality Service Consultant. Most of my work is planned weeks or months in advance, but Lokafy allows me to connect with travelers who book spontaneously, often at the last minute. I absolutely love the flexibility and richness this brings to my life!
What do you love most about the city you guide in?
What I love most about Kanazawa is its perfect balance—it's the right mix of nature and city, beach and mountain, winter and summer, old and new, bustling and serene, historical and trendy. Kanazawa is truly magical!
Can you share a personal story about what led you to live in your current city?
My wife (who is Japanese) and I (French) both grew up in small villages. Though we’ve traveled extensively and lived in various cities, Kanazawa felt like the perfect fit—a city with ample job opportunities that also offers a family-friendly environment similar to the close-knit, peaceful surroundings we knew growing up.
Your Lokafy Experience
Can you share a memorable experience or moment from one of your tours?
I’ve had many memorable moments, but the ones that stand out are often those with a meaningful, almost life-changing impact. A few months ago, I took a German gentleman on a solo evening tour, and he seemed heartbroken over a recent breakup. By the end of the tour, he thanked me for offering a fresh perspective on life. We stayed in touch, and a few weeks later, he shared that he’d decided to turn his life around and was moving to Japan. Moments like these remind me of the power of connection.
What do you think makes a tour truly exceptional?
What makes a tour truly exceptional is understanding who our guests really are and ensuring we deliver what they want—and more. It’s about surprising them with experiences that lead to self-discovery, creating unforgettable memories that go beyond the sights themselves.
How do you prepare for your tours to ensure they are unique and engaging for travelers?
I start by contacting guests beforehand to understand their group and preferences. I check the weather, local sites, events, and experiences available on that specific day. On the day of the tour, I have a brief conversation to see how they’re feeling and what they’re in the mood for. From there, I improvise! While not everyone might prefer this approach, I excel at creating memorable experiences on the spot, tailored to the group’s vibe and interests.
What is your favorite part of being a Lokafyer?
My favorite part of being a Lokafyer is the spontaneity of last-minute bookings and the truly international vibe. I love that Lokafy trusts us to create unforgettable experiences for clients without rigid guidelines or must-see lists. It’s full confidence in my skills and creativity, allowing me the flexibility to craft each tour uniquely—and I thrive on that freedom.
Have you learned anything surprising or unexpected from the travelers you've guided?
Although I was aware of it, I’ve learned that every traveler brings a unique perspective, and often they teach me as much as I teach them. One surprising lesson is how universally impactful small, personal connections can be. I’ve found that even brief conversations can reveal unexpected insights, cultural nuances, or new ways of seeing familiar places. Guiding has shown me that exploration goes both ways, and I’m continually inspired by the stories and perspectives travelers share.
Can you describe a challenging situation you encountered during a tour and how you handled it?
One challenging situation occurred when most of the activities my clients wanted to do were unavailable on the day of their visit due to regular closures. I quickly pivoted by finding other experiences that matched their interests and recommended they try the original activities at another time. In the end, they messages me days later and told me it had all worked out for the best—they enjoyed everything and felt they got more than they expected. Challenges are part of the journey, and I believe in turning them into opportunities to create something even better.
What feedback from travelers has been the most rewarding or impactful for you?
The most rewarding feedback has been from travelers who’ve told me they’ve had guides worldwide but felt I made a significant impact or was the best guide they’ve ever had. Ego aside, this kind of feedback reassures me that I’m in the right line of work: serving others and creating meaningful experiences.
Local Insights
What local hidden gems or off-the-beaten-path spots do you love to share with travelers?
I love sharing hidden gems like a secluded bamboo forest, a moss garden nestled in the middle of nowhere, or a 1,200-year-old temple built on a rock formation, surrounded by breathtaking nature. These spots offer travelers a deeper connection to Japan’s serene beauty away from the usual tourist trails.
Can you describe your favorite neighborhood and why you love it?
I don’t have a single favorite neighborhood—I have many, each with its own charm. My focus is on finding the neighborhood that I feel each traveler will connect with most, based on their interests and vibe. It’s not about my preferences, but about creating the best experience for them.
Do you have any favorite local traditions or events that you recommend to visitors?
As someone who loves nature, I always recommend visitors choose their favorite season to experience Japan—each brings its own beauty and unique events. Whether it’s cherry blossoms in spring, festivals in summer, colorful foliage in autumn, or snow in winter, there’s always something incredible to experience year-round!
Tips and Advice
What advice would you give to new Lokafyers to help them deliver exceptional experiences?
My advice for new Lokafyers is to stay curious and connect with each traveler on a personal level. Listen carefully to their interests, adapt to their energy, and go beyond the usual tourist spots to create unique moments. Authenticity and a genuine passion for your city are what make a tour truly memorable. And do not forget you have your own personality and preferences, so make sure to be you at all times, clients will definitely feel it and be truly thankful for it.
Do you have any tips for visitors on how to make the most of their trip?
Remember that every traveler is unique, so communicate openly with your guides about what you’re looking for and what you’d prefer to avoid. Guides are here to create the best experience for you, but we need a glimpse into your preferences to tailor a tour that truly fits your interests. Last but not least, Enjoy the tour and embrace the moment! Enjoy Japan and make long lasting memories!
