Welcome to Mexico City International Airport! You’ve landed in an ethereal city where millenias of rich history has contributed to a robust, and uniquely central American culture that now defines the region. But you can’t start your adventure until you reach the city centre. Below, we’ve broken down a few transportation options from the airport to the centre of the city.
Taxi
Duration: 20 minutes
Cost: 250-350 MXN
Taxi stands are located at the domestic and international entrances at both Terminal 1 and 2. The following taxi companies are the only ones that are authorized to service the airport:
Porto Taxi
Nueva Imagen
Excelencia
Sitio 300
Confort
Any other taxi service is not legally permitted to service the airport. Due to previous issues with taxi companies inflating meter charges for tourists, the Transport Authority has established a system where you pay for your taxi trip beforehand. Taxi tickets are sold at authorized taxi booths once you exit the baggage claim area. Staff members will be wearing bright yellow jackets and they can assist you with purchasing a ticket. The fare is based on the zone of the city that you are travelling to, so you can expect the prices to vary between 250-350 pesos.
Metro
Duration: 50 minutes
Cost: 5 MXN
While Mexico City’s modern metro system is a convenient and cost effective way to get downtown, if you are travelling with a bag that is larger than a briefcase, you will likely be prevented from embarking on the metro. However, if you are travelling light and are confident in your Spanish language skills, a short walk from Terminal 1 will lead you to Terminal Aerea Station. Note that the station is not connected to the airport, so you will have to walk outside of the airport to reach the station. Follow the signs for trains heading towards Pantitlan station, from Pantitlan you can transfer onto metro line 1 to reach the city’s centre. If you plan on taking the metro be cautious and vigilant as petty theft and violent crimes sometimes occur.
Metrobus
Duration: 40 minutes
Cost: 30 MXN
The metrobus is a public transportation system operated by the government of Mexico City and servicing the downtown core of Mexico City from the airport. The cool thing about taking the metrobus is that you can take line 4 and be dropped off directly at the capital’s points of interests: Paseo de la Reforma Boulevard, the Bellas Artes building and other notable places. While the price point is slightly higher, the metrobus is a relatively safer and more comfortable option than taking the metro into the city. The buses contain luggage racks to store your suitcases during the journey. You can purchase a rechargeable metrobus smartcard from a machine next to the terminal 1 and 2 boarding areas. The airport has signs which will lead you to the metrobus gates.
As in every new city, it is always important to be cautious and wary of your surroundings. We hope you have a safe trip to the center of the city and enjoy your time in Mexico!
