Fabiana, a passionate local in Strasbourg, has always been driven by her love for languages and the rich cultural heritage of her city. Let's read about her journey navigating to the city and still working as a Lokafyer after so many years.
About Me: How I Became a Lokafyer in Strasbourg
My journey as a Lokafyer began in 2019 while I was still a Foreign Languages student. A friend who had previously worked as a Lokafy guide introduced me to the platform, sparking my interest in becoming a guide myself. Soon after, I created my profile and started offering guided tours in Strasbourg, a city that has since become very close to my heart.
Why Strasbourg? A City Rich in History and Diversity
What I love most about Strasbourg is its vibrant, multicultural, and cosmopolitan atmosphere. The city is a treasure trove of diverse architectural styles, ranging from 15th-century Gothic and Romanesque churches to modern European buildings from the late 20th century. In just a 2-hour tour, visitors can experience this incredible range of architecture within a city that feels intimate and welcoming.
My Path to Strasbourg: A Personal Journey
My connection to Strasbourg began in 2013 when I visited family living here for the first time. Later, in 2017, I sought a year-long au pair experience in France, and the first family to accept me was based in Strasbourg. At the time, I was studying International Relations and was thrilled to discover that three major European institutions are headquartered in this city. This discovery solidified my decision to stay, and last year, I proudly earned my Master’s Degree in International Relations right here in Strasbourg.
Memorable Moments: The Joys of Being a Lokafyer
Since starting my journey as a Lokafyer, I’ve had the pleasure of guiding numerous tourists, each bringing unique experiences. I often find myself guiding couples, and I always ask how they decided to visit Strasbourg. Their stories are often sweet and personal, creating a special bond during the tour. What I appreciate most is when tourists share parts of their lives with me that they feel are important—those moments are truly precious.
Crafting Exceptional Tours: The Art of Connection
For me, an exceptional tour is one where tourists interact, share their thoughts, and compare the sights with what they know from their own countries. I value this exchange of ideas and appreciate any feedback that helps me improve.
To ensure my tours are engaging, I contact tourists at least a day before the tour to ask if there’s anything specific they want to see or if they’re happy with my proposed itinerary. I also provide them with a map of the city and suggest additional places and activities they can explore after the tour, extending their experience in Strasbourg.
What I Love About Being a Lokafyer
The opportunity to meet people from around the world and practice foreign languages is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a Lokafyer. English isn’t my first language, and while I studied it for six years, I was initially shy about speaking it. Guiding tours has not only improved my fluency but also boosted my confidence.
I also love seeing tourists’ reactions when they discover Strasbourg’s historical monuments, especially those from the 13th to 15th centuries. Visitors from the United States, in particular, are often amazed by these ancient structures, as their country’s relatively young history doesn’t offer anything similar.
Learning from Travelers: Surprising Insights
One surprising aspect of my work is how many tourists come to Strasbourg to reconnect with their German or Alsatian heritage. It’s always exceptional to guide someone who is exploring their roots in this French-German region.
Overcoming Challenges: A Learning Experience
Guiding isn’t without its challenges. I once led a tour for a family where the father kept pressuring his daughter about her future studies, using the prestigious National School of Administration (ENA) as an example. I had to gently intervene several times to bring the focus back to the tour and ensure everyone enjoyed the experience. While challenging, this experience taught me the importance of balancing information with the needs of the group.
Rewarding Feedback: Moments That Make It All Worthwhile
A month ago, I received the most rewarding feedback from a couple I guided. The husband, who had Alsatian origins, was particularly interested in Strasbourg’s history. They were impressed by my knowledge and friendliness, even saying that I was the highlight of their time in the city. Such feedback boosts my confidence and motivates me to keep refining my tours.
Local Insights: Hidden Gems and Must-Visit Spots
One of my favorite hidden gems is the interior of Saint-Thomas Church, also known as the "Protestant Cathedral." Despite being a Protestant church, it features beautiful stained glass windows, the mausoleum of Maurice de Saxony, impressive organs, and elements typically associated with Catholic churches.
My favorite neighborhood is the Old Town (La Petite France). The view from the Vauban Dam is one of the most beautiful in Strasbourg, and the area is filled with picturesque spots for photography, especially with the lovely flowers around.
Traditional Treats: A Taste of Alsace
I always recommend that visitors try tarte flambée, a traditional Alsace dish. It’s meant to be shared, adding a charming, communal aspect to the dining experience.
Tips for Tailoring Tours
Whether guiding couples or groups, I tailor the pace of the tour to their needs. Couples often appreciate scenic spots for memorable photos, while groups tend to enjoy a more relaxed pace with fewer stops, allowing them to take in the views and interact with each other.
Advice for New Lokafyers: Preparation is Key
To new Lokafyers, I recommend always asking tourists in advance what they expect from the tour. This information is crucial for tailoring the experience to their preferences, making the tour enjoyable for both the tourists and the guide.
Making the Most of Your Strasbourg Visit
For visitors, I advise staying at least two full days in Strasbourg to truly enjoy the city at a relaxed pace. This allows enough time to explore the European district and other attractions without feeling rushed.
Guiding in Strasbourg has been a deeply rewarding journey for our Lokafyer Fabiana, where every tour is an opportunity to connect, share, and learn from travelers from all walks of life. Whether it’s discovering hidden gems, experiencing local traditions, or simply engaging in heartfelt conversations, she finds joy in every moment spent guiding. Her story reminds us of the magic that unfolds when we step into new places with open minds and hearts. If you’re planning a visit to Strasbourg, her tips and insights will undoubtedly help you make the most of your experience in this charming city.
