When you think about Cancun, Mexico, most of you probably associate it with their gorgeous beaches, turquoise seas and spring break! What you probably don’t know is that the sand there will not burn your feet! Interesting, right? I’ll be sharing three fun facts about Cancun that will definitely surprise and excite you!
1. THE SAND WILL NOT BURN YOUR FEET!
Cancun’s beaches are the best beaches in the world and just when you thought they couldn’t get any better, they do! The sand is made up of crushed coral, which means that you will naturally feel a cooling sensation underneath your bare feet. It doesn’t even matter how hot it is, the sand will never burn your feet. If that isn’t interesting enough, I don’t know what is?!
2. IN 1970, ONLY THREE PEOPLE LIVED HERE!
Yes, it’s true! In January 1970, only three people lived in Cancun, Mexico and they were caretakers of a coconut plantation. Things have changed quite a bit from 1970, with now over 700,000 residents at many all-around resorts. This is likely due to their amazing packages/deals for long holiday destinations. 😉
3. THERE'S AN UNDERWATER MUSEUM!
Thanks to sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, there’s many underwater statues located between Cancun and Isla Mujeres. The underwater museum of contemporary art (MUSA) has over 500 life-size sculptures. This makes it the most amazing and largest underwater artificial art attractions in the world! If you want a closer look, you can scuba dive or go on a glass bottom boat excursion through the museum. Incredible works include: The Silent Evolution, The Gardener of Hope, Man on Fire, etc. You can experience this wonderful attraction at an affordable cost, thanks to Cancun’s cheap hotels.
4. BONUS FACT: LONGEST UNDERWATER CAVE!
Aside from their beaches and stunning attractions, Cancun is also widely known for snorkelling and diving excursions! While most travellers explore the reefs, the cenotes are much more unbelievable. Cancun’s cenotes are underground sinkholes and the largest is Ox Bel Ha at 134 miles. This makes it the LARGEST underwater cave in the world! You can explore this underwater cave by diving or in some areas, snorkelling and surface swimming is fine!
Next time you’re looking into a tropical getaway, look no further than Cancun, Mexico! 😊
