Did you know that the Arabic name for Cairo is actually Al-Qahirah, which has three different meanings some of which include, "the conqueror", "the vanquisher" and "the victorious". Although many still refer to the name as Cairo, some Egyptians call it "Masr" which is known as the Arabic name for Egypt.
Cairo is also home to over 1000 Minarets due to the prevalence of Islamic architecture and is known as Umm al-Dounia, "The Mother of the World".
