Every Pride event is an opportunity to celebrate freedom, love, authenticity and the courage to be true to yourself, but they also become important spaces to debate, reflect and organize. And the most wonderful thing is that Pride parades, parties, discussions, etc., also mirror the country's cultures, making each Pride event unique, and an expression of locals’ way of living.

For today’s blog, we wanted to go over some of the ways in which different cities around the world celebrate Pride in their own way, and how it has turned them into attractive destinations for the LGBTQ+ community. In reality, some of these cities have the biggest or most popular Pride events of their respective regions, and clearly, it has garnered them an international reputation. Seeing how these kinds of events grow over time, and how more and more people gather to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, is the perfect example of all the progress that has been made, and a reminder of the need to keep fighting for equal rights.

San Francisco, California:

San Francisco is known for being one of the most progressive cities of the US, and that certainly shows during Pride Month. The whole month of June is packed with activities and events related to the LGBTQ+ community, the streets are filled with colors and rainbow flags, and you can feel the excitement throughout the city. Mark your calendars for plenty of parties, sporting events, film screenings and street fairs made by and for the LGBTQ+ community. Obviously, the one event that you cannot miss is the Pride parade, organized for June 24-25, when around 1 million people will participate, creating a flamboyant, fun and marvelous parade. During a 2-hour-long march, you’ll head over to Market Street, and people from all over the city will be able to salute and be part of the event as well. Don’t worry about the budget, because San Francisco’s Pride Parade is free and open to the public, so you can save some dollars to spend afterwards in one of the multiple queer-friendly bars and restaurants of the city. For 2023, Pride Month’s theme is “Looking Back and Moving Forward”, as a call to commemorate generations of LGBTQ+ pioneers, while also drawing inspiration from their activism, as well as being an opportunity to honor the progressive members of the community that keep fighting today.

Sydney, Australia:

Sydney’s Pride celebrations don't happen during June, but they certainly are loud and proud, and a great occasion to begin all the preparations for Pride Month. The most famous Pride event of Australia is the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras (SGLMG), both a parade and a festival, which began more than forty years ago, and that today is bigger and more important than ever before. The SGLMG organization is a non-profit that, aside from producing this event, supports initiatives throughout the year that celebrates the LGBTQ+ community, gives diverse voices a platform and provides important spaces for different kinds of creative expressions. Thus, even though the Mardi Gras parade happens during February, during the rest of the year, the LGBTQ+ voices of Australia keep working, fighting and celebrating tirelessly. Now, to focus on Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, let’s just say that it is one of Australia’s biggest celebrations, with pool parties, live performances, art and music festivals, and of course, the traditional parade being the protagonist. Australia’s Pride has become so massive, that the Mardi Gras organization and Sydney WorldPride have partnered to create the most incredible Pride experience in the city. Even though the 2023 celebration has ended, start preparing for 2024, because as rumors say, it will be the best edition ever.

From the last week of June to the first week of July, Madrid is transformed and several events tell everyone in the city that Pride has arrived. During MADO (Madrid Orgullo), people will start warming up with the “Carrera de Tacones”, a race in which everyone competes in heels, and with Mr Gay Pride Spain, a beauty contest with participants from all over Spain, that will be competing to represent the country in the international ceremony. On a more serious note, the Madrid Summit is also held during Pride Week, and it is an important space in which LGBTQ+ human rights are discussed, where professionals reflect on the problems that the members of the community face. Last, but certainly not least, the most awaited event of MADO arrives, and it is time for the big parade. People will make their way through Paseo del Prado and the city center, until they reach Chueca, the LGBTQ+-friendly neighborhood of Madrid. Once everyone arrives, Chueca will erupt into an enormous party, with concerts and street fairs to keep everyone entertained.
