Exploring Dresden Like a Local with Lokafyer Ingo

Ingo is a Dresden local who enjoys helping visitors see the city beyond its main attractions. Instead of focusing only on the big sights, he shares the places, stories, and everyday details that give people a clearer sense of what the city is really like.

We spoke with Ingo to talk about what drew him to become a Lokafyer, a deeply emotional discovery during one of his tours, and his philosophy on what makes a journey truly exceptional. If you are planning your first trip or returning to see more of Dresden, Ingo’s perspective reveals a city that rewards curiosity, slower travel, and meaningful connection.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what inspired you to become a Lokafyer

Having joined guided tours on my travels, I often felt overwhelmed by the sights and works of art, how the guides rattled off the famous names, dates, etc., and missed the stories behind all of this needed to get a feeling for the city. And when I stumbled upon Lokafy, I was interested in doing tours for them in my own city right away. I love the idea of a local conveying more personal experiences and deep insight during the tour.

What do you love most about the city you guide in, and what makes it special to you personally?

When UNESCO put Dresden on the World Heritage List in 2004, one of the reasons was that "... the Dresden Elbe Valley is an outstanding cultural landscape, an ensemble that integrates the celebrated Baroque setting and suburban garden city into an artistic whole within the river valley." And that is exactly what I totally love about the city, the combination of urban life, fantastic cultural experiences, with vast forests, parks, gardens, and vineyards only a few steps away.

Your Lokafy Experience

Can you share a memorable or meaningful moment from one of your tours?

One traveler told me a couple of days before the tour that he had contributed to the reconstruction of the famous Church of Our Lady, destroyed in WWII, in a very special way, he had adopted (meaning - paid for) one of the new sandstones. I did some research in preparation for the tour. And bingo, I found the exact position of the stone in the facade, and it was a very emotional moment for him, his family, and myself when we stood by the church and saw his adopted sandstone while I told the story of the church's reconstruction as a sign of reconciliation between former wartime enemies.

In your opinion, what makes a tour truly exceptional for travelers?

A tour that includes places off the beaten path, hidden spots that only locals know (and rarely share with tourists), in combination with stories that bring the buildings to life, makes a tour exceptional. And not everything must be dead serious. I try to throw in some humor.

What is your favorite part of being a Lokafyer?

My favorite part of being a Lokafyer is meeting new people. Every traveler is different, they learn from me and I learn from them.

Local Insights

What are one or two hidden gems or off-the-beaten-path spots you love sharing with visitors?

One of the hidden gems that visitors rarely go to are the three castles that sit above the Elbe River on top of a vineyard about 3 km upstream from the Old Town. The present castles date from the 19th century and are surrounded by beautiful parks. One of them is now a fancy hotel (Schloss Eckberg); the other two, Lingnerschloss and Schloss Albrechtsberg, belong to the city. The interior is usually only accessible on weekends and for special events, but the exterior is well worth a visit, and so is the beautiful park with panoramic views of the city and the mountains in the background. You may want to spend some time in a beer garden or restaurant or have a wine tasting at winery Lutz Müller. Tram No. 11 takes you there; get off at the stop with the appropriate name "Elbschlösser."

Another often overlooked place, or rather an educational trail with several locations, is the "Trail of the Revolution," referring to the years 1989/90. You can start right at the main railway station, from where it takes you along the pedestrian shopping zone Prager Straße to the Old Town and across the river to the New Town. The city has a website (dresden.de/revolution) where you can download a flyer and find a link to Komoot with a trail description.

Is there a local tradition, neighborhood, or experience you always recommend and why?

A tradition in Germany that is not to be missed is the Christmas markets and related events. If you can make it, come and visit Dresden in the Advent season from late November through Christmas Eve. Dresden has several Christmas markets in the center that are differently themed, from traditional like the Striezelmarkt, the oldest Christmas market in Germany, to medieval in the Royal Stables court, to elegant and stylish with white tents across the river at Hauptstraße. It also has cute smaller markets and events in the residential areas and outskirts. Don't miss the related traditions and events: taste the local pastry Dresdner Christstollen, gingerbread, and mulled wine; attend a Christmas concert; and visit a Christmas exhibit of folk art.

A neighbourhood that I highly recommend exploring is the Neustadt (New Town) district. It is located across the river from the Old Town and consists of two very different parts: close to the river is the Inner New Town with elegant Baroque architecture, upscale stores, boutiques and art galleries, fancy restaurants, and bars. Walk beyond Albertplatz circus, and you get to a different world, Victorian architecture, graffiti and street art, ethnic restaurants, a vibrant club, pub, and bar scene, independent movie theatres, and quirky shops. It is the nightlife district, especially for younger crowds.
