We continue our weekly session of getting to know our incredible Lokafyers. For the last few weeks, we’ve asked them details about their lives, work and how they got where they are. This section is our way to showcase all of their talents and the countless reasons why they are the heart and soul of our family. As you’ve seen, some of them began their journey simply visiting a new place, while others have grown there. Regardless of who they are, their nationalities or age, if there’s one thing that they all share is their passion for traveling and love for connecting with others! Now, for this particular conversation with Patricia, we decided to change the questions a bit, focusing more on their experience as a Lokafyer and seeing how it has become intertwined with her own life. Keep reading to learn more about Patricia, her love for Toronto and what being a Lokafyer has meant for her.
Why did you decide to join Lokafy?
I chose to join Lokafy because I have a deep passion for traveling and immersing myself in diverse cultures. This platform enables me to share my enthusiasm for architecture, history, and the everyday life of Toronto, my city of residence. It's an excellent opportunity to not only gain insights into various perspectives but also to educate others about the experience of living in and exploring the city. Through Lokafy, I can paint a vivid picture of a day in the life of Toronto, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation for its unique charm.
What do you love most about your city?
My favorite thing about the city of Toronto is the diversity of flavors and cultures that you encounter while exploring it. Toronto is a melting pot of different ethnicities and backgrounds, which is reflected in its vibrant food scene and cultural experiences. As I walk through the streets of this dynamic city, I am constantly amazed by the wide array of restaurants, eateries, and food markets, each offering unique and authentic cuisines from all around the world.
Moreover, this cultural diversity extends beyond the culinary delights. The city boasts a rich tapestry of art, music, festivals, and traditions that showcase the beauty of multiculturalism. Toronto's neighborhoods are like mini cultural hubs, each with its own distinct charm and character. I find it incredibly enriching to immerse myself in these diverse communities, where I can learn about different customs, languages, and histories, all coming together to create a colorful mosaic of experiences.
If someone comes to visit you, where would you take them to eat?
I would love to showcase the diverse array of dishes available in Toronto to anyone who visits me. I believe a fantastic starting point for the day would be St. Lawrence Market, offering options like a delicious Canadian bacon sandwich or the delectable offerings from the French bakery. Another excellent choice for breakfast could be a satisfying Greek meal. Moving on to lunch, I think the ultimate destination is Kensington Market, where one can explore various oriental flavors, such as a delightful bowl of ramen.
For dinner, I am particularly fond of the ambiance in the Distillery District, Yorkville, or Little Italy – all three are fantastic options depending on each person's budget. These areas offer a wide range of culinary experiences, ensuring that everyone can find something that suits their preferences.
When you’re not working for Lokafy, what do you like to do for fun?
I am a very active person, always on the lookout for new festivals, theater plays, and concerts. My hobby is singing and dancing; I usually go out for karaoke and salsa dancing. On a typical weekday, I usually go for a walk or run and observe my surroundings. I really enjoy exploring new paths and discovering new favorite places. During the summer, I also tend to go hiking to a place outside the city to meditate and connect with nature.
What is your favorite travel memory?
My favorite travel memory would be when I went to the Rio de Janeiro Carnival. I'm deeply in love with the Portuguese language, samba, and the joy of Brazil. The trip was incredible because it exceeded my expectations. I went with some fear due to the news and stories of the city's dangers. However, when I was there, every moment was filled with cheerful and fun-loving people eager to share their culture. I didn't have any negative experiences; there were more kind people wanting to help than there were dangers. It's a destination I highly recommend, and if you can visit during Carnival to witness the magnificent art of the costumes, stages, dances, and music, it's an unforgettable experience.
What is your favorite tour memory?
My favorite memory with tourists was with a Mexican grandfather and his grandson traveling through Canada. The grandfather felt like my own grandfather, sharing stories with me, asking about the details of being an immigrant in an English-speaking country, curious to know what had taken me so far from home. He was a very wise man, giving me advice as we explored the city. Seeing the city through his different perspective, he was a very curious and energetic tourist. I really enjoyed exchanging experiences and knowledge with someone wiser than me in life's journey.
Have you kept in touch with any travelers?
It's wonderful that many of the tourists have become my friends. Some of them even invited me to their countries to learn about their cultures as well. They reach out to me to check on how I'm doing or to discuss plans for their next trip to Canada. I've been fortunate to consistently have positive experiences with Lokafy.
