Johannesburg has plenty to offer when it comes to restaurants, tourist attractions, museums, art galleries, etc. Although one day is not ideal to see all of Johannesburg, it is enough to squeeze in time to see the city’s amazing scenery. With many activities to do and places to see, we’ve compiled a list of the best Johannesburg has to offer, from restaurants to places, all within 24 hours!
Start off your morning exploring the Wits Art Museum! Inside, there is a wide variety of African art on display (for free by the way 😉) and it is purely historical. The works displayed are by Irma Stern, J.H. Pierneef, Walter Battiss and many more. You can always visit their website for more information.
A five-minute drive from Wits Art Museum will take you to Constitution Hill, which many say is a must-see place to visit. Constitution Hill is a former prison and highlights South Africa’s uplifting journey to democracy. You can also visit the Constitutional Court as well. It has been recommended by many to book a tour, so that the knowledge obtained can be more educational and fun.
Parktown North is a lively suburb for great meals during lunch and with a great view! There’s cafes, world-class steakhouses, and bistro-type restaurants. There are more popular restaurants in Parkhurst, but you must make a reservation as it fills up fast! If you’re looking for authentic South African dishes, you can dine at Die Waenhuis Restaurant or D6 District Six Eatery. Each neighbourhood in Johannesburg offers unique perspectives. There is always something for everyone to love.
If your lunch hasn’t made you too lazy, you should definitely check out the city’s many parks! If there’s anything Johannesburg is known for, it’s their greenery. The city has over ten million trees! If you’ve packed a blanket, you can spread it out and enjoy the view or you can explore their beautiful gardens and walkways. Either way, it will be a very relaxing afternoon for you.
Located in Sandton, this area is known for its large statue of former President Nelson Mandela. There are also 10 restaurants, all within close distance. You have a variety of options that include sushi spots, Italian cuisine, casual eateries, etc.
If you love the theatre or you don’t, you should still go and see the incredible Broadway productions at Montecasino. It even includes ballet and musical performances that are spectacular! You should check out their website to book in advance and to view their calendar for which acts you want to see!
24 hours is not much time to explore an entire city, especially the greenery and delicious food of Johannesburg, but having an itinerary is always useful to make your lives wandering around easier. And if you forget to make one, you can read this blog how ever many times you need to get familiarized with the lovely places Johannesburg has to offer. Safe travels exploring Johannesburg, South Africa! 😊
