More times than none, Athens is known for being a place for a quick stop or layover before making your way to the islands, however, we truly suggest taking at least a day to explore this often forgotten city and watch it slowly reveal its beauty to you.
One of the most historically rich cities in the world comes to life as we take you through our 24-hour guide of the vast capital of Greece that goes beyond the very well-known Acropolis. Most notably known for being the birthplace of key cultural pinnacles as we know it today such as philosophy, theater, and architecture, you'll want to stay for more than a day to truly take in all that Athens has to offer.
Start your day early at the Acropolis!
Athens is often synonymous with the Acropolis, and for very good reason. If it's your first time in Athens, you'll definitely want to stop by the most well-known spot in the city, but we wanted to emphasize that there is definitely much more the city has to offer beyond just the Acropolis. We recommend going early in the morning to beat the crowds and to leave the rest of your day open to explore the hidden gems of Athens.
Explore the Quaint Neighbourhood of Anafiotika
Just a short 15 minute walk away north from the Acropolis lies Anafiotika, a stunning tiny neighbourhood in the Plaka district that looks like you just stepped into the Greek islands. Get lost in the winding roads and steps that will lead you through dozens of picturesque white-painted houses, vibrant flowers and plants, quiet corners, and cats taking a lazy nap.
Admire the architecture and history of the Kapnikarea Church!
Religion has played a crucial role in shaping the history and culture of Athens, so be sure to make your way through one of the many churches that can be found in Greece's capital. Some of our recommendations include Kapnikarea Church, Athens Metropolitan Church, and St. Irene.
Grab a bite to eat in Plaka
After you've made your way around Anafiotika, located in the same area of Plaka are an abundance of quality restaurants to eat your fill for lunch. Treat yourself to Athen's best and be sure to order lots of seafood, Greek salad, and their specialty lamb dishes! After eating all that food, have a walk around the streets of Plaka and browse through the plethora of small shops that you'll bump into along the way.
Stop by the Underground Hot Springs for an Afternoon Soak.
A hidden gem tucked about 20 kilometers away from the city center lies Vouliagmeni Lake, filled with lush underground hot springs full of minerals and salt believed to be wonderfully beneficial for many skin issues and ailments. Or if you're like me and just want a break from all the walking around you just did earlier in the day, relaxing in the balmy 24°C water overlooking vast, majestic caves sounds just about right to me! Vouliagmeni Lake also plays host to many events such as theatre performances and jazz concerts as a way to wind down after your soak in the hot springs.
Visit the Stadiums at Olympic Park
If there's one place you can't leave Athens without going to, it's the Olympic Park. All the history classes you took in school have probably given you a sense of how important sports and athleticism were to the Greeks back in the day, and the best part is that it's free to walk through the park. Learn about the fascinating history behind the Olympic Games as you stroll through the park just in time for sunset. Within the park are the 2 Olympic stadiums, each one built for the 1904 and 2004 Olympic Games which took place in Athens.
The Panathenaic Stadium is also worth checking out and is found right beside the National Gardens of the park (although you'll need to pay an entrance fee to enter), we suggest admiring this one just from the outside which is just as stunning.
Fun fact: the Panathenaic Stadium is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble!
Live like the locals and watch a movie under the stars
Going to watch a movie may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of what to do in Greece, but this past time is a local favourite here in Athens, specifically watching a film outdoors! Experience the authentic side of Athens as you feel the breezy, warm air and sit back amongst locals while you enjoy a film on a big screen under the stars. There are lots of outdoor cinemas which can be found throughout the city with your pick of modern and classic films.
Step into another world and have a few drinks...
End off your day with a few drinks at one of the most colourful spots in Athens, Brettos Bar. Boasting a wide selection of local wines and spirits, admire all the colours surrounding you as you immerse in some great conversation with good company. Be sure to try just a bit of Athen's prized jewel (ouzo) before capping off the night!
