With the city’s intense love for football, music, and art, no wonder Liverpool was crowned as Europe’s Capital of Culture in 2008. Liverpool is an exciting place to visit, one that has reinvented itself to be an eclectic modern city, full of stunning architecture, renowned museums, award-winning restaurants, the list goes on!
There are many sites to see once you are here, but in 24 hours we got the best itinerary for you to truly see the beauty of Liverpool during your short stay, just the way a local does.
Start Your Day with a Traditional English Breakfast
What would be a visit to Liverpool without an English breakfast? This British dish, sometimes called the ‘fry-up’, is well loved in the United Kingdom and even around the world! It usually consists of sausages, fried eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, back bacon, fried bread, black (blood sausage) or white pudding, with buttered, hot toast. There are many variations with some including hash browns or baked beans. The meal is mainly eaten with tea or coffee.
For the best of this dish, we recommend heading to The Tavern Company on Penny lane, which was voted as UK’s best breakfast in 2014 and 2015. It offers a full day breakfast menu as well; try the ‘Full English’ on their menu to get the real deal of a breakfast!
Wander Around Royal Albert Dock
A famous site in Liverpool, the Royal Albert Dock carries deep history and is treasured by the city. Built in the mid 1800’s, it’s use of pure stone and metal (no wood), made it a futuristic and revolutionary dock for it’s time, one of the earliest fireproof docks ever made. Due to it’s status it was even used as a naval base in World War II. Now it consists of the largest collection of UNESCO-titled buildings in the country, filled with attractions from galleries to restaurants.
Unwind and walk around the dock, notice the unique architecture of the buildings and the amazing views the dock brings. Anyone a fan of the Beatles? Well, there is a museum nearby that is dedicated to sharing their stories and rise to fame, as they are Liverpool’s most famous band! If you want to try something new, take a trip on the Floating Grace, which is Liverpool’s only floating bar and restaurant. With so many things to see and explore, you will never get bored here.
Admire the Beauty of Pier Head
Pier Head is a must visit to see the iconic skyline of Liverpool it has to offer. It’s cherished for three architectural landmarks known as the Three Graces, symbols of Liverpool and it’s pride. The three buildings that make up the Three Graces are the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building, and the Port of Liverpool Building.
The stunning Royal Liver Building is one of Britain's multi-story concrete framed buildings. It tells the story of two Liver birds, the city’s maritime heritage; in which one looks out to watch the city, the people, while the other gazes upon the sea, Liverpool’s prosperity. The Cunard Building was built with a mix of Italian Renaissance and a Greek Revival style of architecture. Above the ground floor windows, it displays sculptural portraits of people around the globe to symbolize global operations. The Port of Liverpool Building is an elegant building, made up of cast iron gates, with the pier gates featuring maritime symbols of the city’s history.
There are many other beautiful sites in the area, including the Museum of Liverpool, many important statues, and the Mersey Tunnel Building. A heaven for architecture lovers!
Relax at Sefton Park
Need to unwind after a long day of adventure? Head to Sefton Park, a large open area park located in the southern region of Liverpool. It is adored by the locals, primarily during the summer months, and has many features such as lakes, unique buildings, and of course many pathways.
Enjoy a leisurely time, surrounded by natural landscapes, wildlife, and locals. This quaint area also has a special building called the Palm House, a three level building built in 1896, made out of glass panels, and surrounded by statues of notable scientists, botanists, and explorers, such as Captain Cook. The park also sometimes holds exhibitions and even activities for children. Take a stroll around the area and take in the scenery, it is a perfect place to relax.
End the Day with a Visit to Baltic Triangle
New York has Brooklyn, and Liverpool has the Baltic Triangle! Known by the locals as “the baltic”, your trip would not be complete without a visit to this cultural hub. A 15 minute walk from south of the city center, this place used to be an industrial complex full of warehouses and factories. Now, it’s a creative and exciting area full of everything you can think of; music venues, skateparks, arcades, breweries, the Baltic Triangle is a dream for everybody.
For the best local street food Liverpool has to offer, head to the Baltic Market where you will find meals that meat lovers and vegans adore! Feel the need to play some retro arcade games? Head to Arcains for a full night of fun. You can even play golf at an indoor golf course at Ghetto Golf. The scene is bursting with entertainment and things to do; you will find locals celebrating birthdays, partying the night away, or just having a simple outing with family.
This amazing spot will make you end your journey on a high note, full of fun and stories you will keep for the rest of your life.
